Putin may restore tougher tone to relations with U.S.

Vladimir Putin, the former and next president of Russia, has long had a sharp-tongued prickliness about the United States. “Hooligan,” he snapped at one time. “Parasite” was his most recent description.

In contrast, Russia’s current president, Dmitry Medvedev, cast himself as the tech-savvy reformer with a Twitter account , and he mostly smiled at the West.

Repeating mistakes of the 1930s

“We are back in a danger zone,” says a top economist at the International Monetary Fund. Though an understatement, it captures the central paradox of this year’s annual meeting of the IMF and World Bank. Everyone is alarmed at the swift deterioration of the economic outlook, but there is no leadership — no consensus on what to do or, even when crude agreement exists, little conviction that practical politics will permit action. There is a hazardous vacuum of ideas and power.

Pentagon may cap executive pay reimbursement at $694,000

Lockheed Martin and other defense contractors won’t be able to bill the government for more than $693,951 a year in total salary and compensation for any executives under a proposal headed for congressional approval.

The Senate is mulling an expansion to all executives from current rules limiting the cap to contractors’ top five executives. The House has approved a cap on all employees of defense vendors. While the full Senate has yet to vote on its committee-approved version, and the two chambers must still reconcile their differences, the expanded executive pay limit has a good chance to survive.

Pentagon extends program to defend corporate networks as cyberattacks get more sophisticated

WASHINGTON — As hackers and hostile nations launch increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks against U.S. defense contractors, the Pentagon is extending a pilot program to help protect its prime suppliers.

That program could possibly serve as a model for other government agencies. It is being evaluated by the Department of Homeland Security, as part of a potential effort to extend similar protections to power plants, the electric grid and other critical infrastructure.

Saudi women get right to vote, but can't drive yet

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) — Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah, considered a reformer by the standards of his own ultraconservative kingdom, decreed on Sunday that women will for the first time have the right to vote and run in local elections due in 2015.

It is a "Saudi Spring" of sorts.

For the nation's women, it is a giant leap forward, though they remain unable to serve as Cabinet ministers, drive or travel abroad without permission from a male guardian.

Saudi women bear the brunt of their nation's deeply conservative values, often finding themselves the target of the unwanted attention of the kingdom's intrusive religious police, who enforce a rigid interpretation of Islamic Shariah law on the streets and public places like shopping malls and university campuses.

In itself, Sunday's decision to give the women the right to vote and run in municipal elections may not be enough to satisfy the growing ambition of the kingdom's women who, after years of lavish state spending on education and vocational training, significantly improved their standing but could not secure the same place in society as that of their male compatriots.

That women must wait four more years to exercise their newly acquired right to vote adds insult to injury since Sunday's announcement was already a long time coming — and the next local elections are in fact scheduled for this Thursday.

"Why not tomorrow?

Herman Cain victory in Fla. straw poll a sign of voter displeasure with GOP field

ORLANDO, Fla.— Republican activists want a candidate who is not just conservative on nearly every issue, but has been so his or her entire career. A good enough politician to debate and then defeat President Obama. Charismatic too.

They’re still looking. The overwhelming victory by businessman and longshot candidate Herman Cain in a straw poll here Saturday was a sign that the latest person to try to capture the fancy of party activists, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, is at least for now struggling to do so.

Why we need a third party

So here’s where we are. Our president calls himself “a warrior for the middle class” because he’s campaigning for a plan that might add 2 million new jobs next year at a time when 25 million Americans who want full-time work can’t find it.

If that’s war, what would surrender look like?

Meanwhile, Republican zealots apparently feel that if they can’t cut 0.04 percent of the budget in the next few days they’d rather shut down the government. The party’s presidential candidates boast that a 10-to-1 ratio of spending cuts to tax increases isn’t good enough on a long-term debt deal — even though we’re about to double the number of seniors on Social Security and Medicare.

The real threat in Egypt: Delayed democracy

Is Egypt imploding?

A lot of people in Washington seem to think so, though they are talking about it quietly so far. Their fears are specific: that the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamic fundamentalist parties will take power when Egypt’s first democratic elections are held later this year; and that peace with Israel — the foundation of a 30-year, American-backed order in the Middle East — is “hanging by a thread,” as Robert Satloff of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy put it.

U.S. announces details of planned arms package for Taiwan

The Obama administration announced details Wednesday of its planned arms package for Taiwan even as China lodged formal protests and Taiwanese officials said they may begin pushing for another deal that would include state-of-the-art fighter jets.

The $5.85 billion arms package proposed by the Obama administration would retrofit Taiwan’s aging fleet of 145 F-16 A/Bs and provide pilot training and spare parts to maintain the nation’s even older F-5 jets and C-130 transport planes. Administration officials have described the sale as a sign of enduring commitment to Taiwan.

Hatch threatens UN funding over Palestine

By Matt Canham The Salt Lake Tribune
Published Sep 21, 2011 05:06PM MDT
Washington • If the United Nations recognizes Palestine as a member nation, Sen. Orrin Hatch wants the United States to pull all of its funding for the international organization. Hatch, R-Utah, introduced legislation to that effect on Wednesday, Sept. 21 saying that such a move would hurt Israel and short-circuit any legitimate peace negotiations. “Make no mistake, there will be consequences associated with efforts to undermine the security of America’s friends and allies,” Hatch said. Federal Reserve to buy longer-term bonds to try to lower interest rates, boost economy

The Federal Reserve took a dramatic step Wednesday to help revive the economy, resuming its unconventional efforts at stimulating growth nearly a year after embarking on an initiative that ultimately failed to deliver a healthy recovery.

The Fed’s latest move aims to lower interest rates on mortgages and other long-term loans without making another major infusion of money into the economy — and brushes aside a crescendo of criticism from Republicans who have been making the Fed a campaign issue.
